Amsterdam is the location people pick when the job is moving bytes. It is not our cheapest — Bucharest is — and it is not the obvious default for continental Europe — Frankfurt is. What Amsterdam has is peering, and if your workload is bandwidth-shaped or points at the UK, that is the only variable that matters.
What a VPS costs in Amsterdam
The Netherlands carries the same location premium as Poland on our hourly VPS line — €1.00 a month on the smallest plan, €16.00 on the largest, over the Romanian base:

The peering argument
Amsterdam sits on AMS-IX, historically the world's largest internet exchange and still among the top three by traffic. What makes that matter commercially is who is on it: the large content networks all keep heavy presence there, so paths to popular content are short and a lot of traffic that would otherwise cross a transit link stays on the exchange.

The UK case
The London figure is the interesting one. At 7–9 ms to LINX, an Amsterdam origin often beats hosting inside the UK on tail latency, because a London server's advantage on the median is small and its disadvantage on poorly-peered routes is not. If your users are British and you do not have a UK-residency requirement, Amsterdam is worth measuring before you assume you need a London box.
The bandwidth case
Package mirrors, file distribution, media delivery, anything where egress volume rather than request rate is the cost driver — these benefit from deep content peering more than from raw proximity. For an RTMP or HLS origin serving Western and Northern Europe, Amsterdam and Frankfurt are the two sensible choices and Amsterdam has the edge toward the UK and Scandinavia. What a 10 Gbps port is actually worth is covered in our unmetered streaming post.
When Amsterdam is not the answer
- Continental Europe, one location only → Frankfurt. It is 8–10 ms away and better placed for everything east and south of it.
- Polish or Baltic users → Warsaw, at the same price as Amsterdam.
- Romanian, Bulgarian or Greek users → Bucharest, which is also cheaper.
- Cost is the whole brief → Bucharest. A 32 GB machine is €58.00 there against €74.00 here.
Hourly, and the one rule people miss
Every Amsterdam plan bills hourly at the monthly price divided by 720 hours, drawn from prepaid account credit once per clock hour at the top of the hour in UTC. A 16 GB machine for a two-day bandwidth test is 48 × €0.0333 = €1.60.
The rule: powering the server off does not stop the charges. A stopped virtual machine still holds its RAM, its disk and its IP on a node, so it bills exactly as a running one does. Deleting it is what stops the meter. If credit runs out there is one hour of grace before suspension and 48 hours before termination, with warnings and optional automatic top-up first.
Running indefinitely? Take the monthly, quarterly or annual cycle — the annual price is 10% below twelve months at the base rate.
