Sofia VPS Now Live: Hourly KVM and 10 Gbps Streaming in Bulgaria

October 1, 2026Mario Marin
Published: 1 October 2026
Sofia is now on the order form. When you order a KVM VPS you can pick Bulgaria as the location, and your server is built in Sofia on a node that went into service today. Every size of both VPS lines is available there: the hourly VPS plans, billed by the hour or by the month, and the streaming VPS plans with a 10 Gbps port.
That makes seven VPS locations in total: Bucharest, Sofia, Vienna, Frankfurt, Warsaw, Amsterdam and Ashburn. Sofia is the first one south of the Danube, and it is the closest we have ever been to Greece, Turkey and the western Balkans.

What a server in Sofia costs

Sofia carries the same location fee as Frankfurt and Vienna. On hourly billing that fee is spread across 720 hours, and an hourly server is billed for at most 720 hours in a calendar month, so a server you forget to delete never costs more than its monthly price. Bucharest remains our lowest priced location if every cent matters more than the extra few hundred kilometres.

Latency from Sofia to our other locations

We pinged each of our other nodes from the new Sofia node on 1 October 2026. These are average round trip times over five packets, not estimates:
From Sofia toRound trip
Bucharest7.5 ms
Vienna15.6 ms
Frankfurt22.2 ms
Warsaw27.4 ms
Amsterdam28.0 ms
Ashburn118.2 ms
The number that stands out is Bucharest. At 7.5 ms, Sofia and Bucharest are close enough to behave like two rooms in the same building for most applications, while still sitting in two different countries and two different facilities. Our guide to picking a location by latency explains how to turn numbers like these into a decision.

Who should pick Sofia

Sites and apps with visitors in Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and the Balkans

Sofia sits roughly 240 km from Thessaloniki, 330 km from Belgrade, 500 km from Istanbul and 525 km from Athens in a straight line. If most of your traffic comes from that corner of Europe, a server here starts every page load and every API call closer to the people waiting for it than anything in Germany or the Netherlands can.

Streams for viewers in Southeast Europe

A streaming VPS in Sofia keeps the 10 Gbps port and unmetered traffic of the other locations, so a relay or restream server for Bulgarian, Greek or Turkish audiences can now live in the same region as its viewers. Our streaming VPS setup guide covers bitrate and sizing.

A second location next to Bucharest

If you already run in Bucharest, Sofia is the natural partner for a replica, a standby or an offsite backup target. The 7.5 ms gap is small enough for database replication to keep up comfortably, and an outage in one city leaves the other untouched. See our offsite backup walkthrough for one way to set that up.

An EU location that is not one of the usual four

Bulgaria is a full member of the European Union, so personal data hosted in Sofia stays inside the EU. For teams that want residency in the Union but prefer not to put everything in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London or Paris, our EU data residency guide walks through the options.

A note on IP location

The addresses in Sofia are new to us, and the public IP location databases have not all caught up yet. Some lookup services may still show them in another country for the next few weeks. The servers themselves are in Sofia. If your project depends on a Bulgarian IP being recognised by a specific service, check that service before you rely on it.

The hardware

The Sofia node runs two Intel Xeon E5 2699 v4 processors with 88 threads, 256 GB of RAM and SSD storage mirrored across two drives, so a single drive failure does not take a virtual server down. It connects to the network at 10 Gbps. Every VPS is a full KVM virtual machine with its own kernel and root access, and it uses the same images and the same client area as our other locations.

Ordering a server in Sofia

  1. Open the hourly VPS order page or the streaming VPS order page.
  2. Choose a size and pick Bulgaria as the location.
  3. Select an operating system and complete the order. The Bulgaria fee is already included in the total you see.
Want to test before you commit? A VPS I KVM running in Sofia for a full day costs about 18 cents on hourly billing. Deploy one, measure from where your users are, and delete it when you are done.
