Dedicated Server in Madrid: Spain, Portugal and Latin America

If your customers are in Spain, your server should be too. Madrid is where the Spanish internet meets, it is a short hop from Lisbon and Barcelona, and among our locations it is the closest to Latin America. Our dedicated servers are available in Spain at the same price as in every other country we serve, with an unmetered, guaranteed port. This post covers who Madrid suits, what it does and does not do for Latin American traffic, and what to order.

Why Madrid for Spanish users

ESpanix, the Spanish internet exchange, is the largest peering point in the country, and the major Spanish providers are present in Madrid. A server here reaches Spanish homes and businesses over short domestic paths. Hosting the same site in Frankfurt adds a lot: our Madrid location page puts the Frankfurt round trip at 30 to 35 ms, and a fresh HTTPS connection needs about three round trips before the first byte arrives. For a Spanish visitor that can mean around a tenth of a second of waiting before anything happens, on every new connection.
Barcelona and its CATNIX exchange are typically 8 to 10 ms from Madrid, so a server in the capital serves Catalonia almost as well as one in Barcelona would.

Portugal, from next door

We do not have a location in Portugal, but Lisbon is typically 10 to 12 ms from Madrid. For most Portuguese audiences that is close enough to feel local, and far better than routing them to Germany or the Netherlands. A business that sells in both Spain and Portugal can serve the whole Iberian peninsula from one server in Madrid.

What Madrid does for Latin America, honestly

Madrid is the closest of our locations to South America, but closest is not close. Our location page lists São Paulo at typically 180 to 200 ms from Madrid. That is fine for a website or an API that is not chatty, and it is too slow for anything interactive, like a game, a call or a trading tool.
Madrid makes sense for Latin American traffic in a few specific cases:
  • A Spanish business with visitors on both sides of the Atlantic. Spain is the main market and Latin America is a welcome extra. Host in Madrid, put static files and images behind a cache, and both audiences are served reasonably.
  • Back offices and editorial systems. A newsroom or shop run from Spain keeps its admin tools near the people using them every day.
  • Data that has to stay in the EU. If Latin American customer data must be stored in Europe, Madrid is the shortest way to do it.
If most of your users are in Latin America and the experience has to feel instant, a European server is the wrong tool, wherever it is. Be honest with yourself about that before you order.

What a dedicated server in Spain costs

Prices are monthly, exclude VAT and are identical in every country. Every server includes 1 Tbps always on DDoS protection (L3/L4) and no setup fee.
ServerCoresRAM1 Gbps2 Gbps10 Gbps
Dual Xeon E5 2630 v316128 GB€209€259€659
Dual Xeon E5 2690 v428128 GB€229€279€679
Dual Xeon E5 2699 v444256 GB€299€349€749
Single AMD EPYC 925424128 GB DDR5€449€529€1,169
Unmetered means nobody counts your traffic: a 1 Gbps port can move up to 324 TB in a month at the same price as 1 TB. Xeon servers in stock are usually online within about an hour, and EPYC builds can take up to 14 days.

A second location for a Madrid server

A standby in another country protects you from a regional outage. From Madrid, the natural partners are:
PartnerTypical round trip from MadridWhy
Marseille20 to 25 msClosest of our other locations, on the Mediterranean
Paris22 to 25 msCovers France and the rest of Western Europe
Frankfurt30 to 35 msCentral hub if you also serve Central Europe
Marseille and Paris are both in France, and our post on choosing between Paris and Marseille explains how to order either one.

Three setups that work from Madrid

ProjectSetupPer month
Spanish online shopDual E5 2690 v4, 1 Gbps, 2 × 500 GB SSD, Spain€234
Video and downloads for Spain and PortugalDual E5 2690 v4, 10 Gbps, 6 × 1 TB SSD, Spain€748
Madrid primary with a standby in FranceDual E5 2690 v4, 1 Gbps in Spain, plus Dual E5 2630 v3, 1 Gbps in France€438
The video server can push 10 Gbps around the clock without a traffic bill, and our post on 10 Gbps price per terabyte shows what that costs per TB delivered. The standby in France is a smaller server, which is often enough for a machine that only has to take over now and then.

Looking for a VPS in Madrid?

We do not sell VPS plans in Spain. Our nearest VPS location is Frankfurt, typically 30 to 35 ms away, and the order page shows whether it is in stock today. For a small Spanish project a VPS is a fine way to start, and a dedicated server in Madrid is the move when your audience grows or you need the hardware to yourself.

How to order in Spain

  1. Pick a server and a port on the dedicated servers page.
  2. Choose Spain at checkout. The price stays the same.
  3. Add drives and IPv4 addresses if you need them. A /28 with 13 usable addresses is €26 a month.
  4. Pick an operating system and pay. If you need the server by a certain date, ask us by live chat or ticket what is in stock in Spain first.
Our overview of dedicated servers in ten European countries compares Spain with the other nine.
