Dedicated Server in Milan: Hosting for Italy and Switzerland

Italy's internet has one centre of gravity, and it is Milan. The Milan Internet eXchange, MIX, is by far the largest exchange in the country, the big Italian providers all meet there, and Zurich is only a few milliseconds away. Our dedicated servers are available in Italy at the same price as in every other country we serve, with an unmetered, guaranteed port. Here is who Milan is for, how it compares with hosting the same site in Frankfurt, and what to order.

Milan for Italian users

A visitor in Italy reaches a server in Milan over domestic paths. A server in Frankfurt sits behind the Alps, and our Milan location page puts the difference for Italian users at 15 to 20 ms per round trip. A new HTTPS visitor waits for about three round trips before the first byte of the page arrives, and every API call and database lookup from an Italian app pays the gap again. For an Italian shop, booking system or SaaS, that is reason enough to host in Italy.
Milan is also well placed for the rest of the country. Our location page lists Rome at typically 10 to 12 ms, so one server in Milan covers north and south. Italy is in the European Union, and some Italian public bodies and companies ask for servers inside the country. Our EU data residency guide covers what else to check.

Switzerland, from an EU location

Zurich is typically 8 to 10 ms from Milan. For Swiss customers that is close to local, and for a Swiss company it opens a useful option: a server inside the European Union, a few milliseconds from home. That suits Swiss businesses that sell into the EU and want their customer data stored there, and EU businesses that sell into Switzerland and want to stay near their Swiss users.

Typical round trips from Milan

From Milan toTypical round trip
Zurich8 to 10 ms
Rome10 to 12 ms
Marseille12 to 15 ms
Frankfurt18 to 22 ms
Vienna20 to 23 ms
Madrid30 to 35 ms
These are the typical figures from our location page. For the cities where we run VPS nodes, our measured latency table has exact numbers between them.

The Adriatic and the Mediterranean

Milan also serves the countries across the Adriatic. Our location page notes that for the Slovenian and Croatian coast and for Albania, Milan often beats Frankfurt by 10 to 15 ms. Combined with Marseille, 12 to 15 ms away, it gives a Mediterranean business two locations close to most of its customers. Our post on Paris or Marseille covers the French half of that pair.

What a dedicated server in Italy costs

Prices are monthly, exclude VAT and match every other country. Every server includes 1 Tbps always on DDoS protection (L3/L4) and no setup fee.

Single AMD EPYC 925424128 GB DDR5€449€769€1,169
On the Xeon servers, look at 10 Gbps before you settle on 5: it costs €140 more for twice the port. On EPYC every gigabit costs the same, so 5 Gbps is a fair middle step there. Xeon servers in stock are usually online within about an hour, and EPYC builds can take up to 14 days.

The EPYC server comes with two 1 TB NVMe drives and DDR5 memory, which suits a database heavy SaaS. The media server keeps popular files in 256 GB of RAM and serves them over a 10 Gbps port that nobody meters. If your audience grows past one server, our guide to building your own CDN shows how to add edges in other countries.

Looking for a VPS in Milan?

We do not sell VPS plans in Italy. The nearest VPS locations are Vienna and Frankfurt, both around 20 ms from Milan, and the order page shows which of them is in stock today. A VPS there is a sensible start for a small Italian project, with a dedicated server in Milan as the step up once you need the hardware to yourself or want to be in the country.

How to order in Italy

  1. Pick a server and a port on the dedicated servers page.
  2. Choose Italy at checkout. The price does not change.
  3. Add drives and an IPv4 subnet if you need them.
  4. Pick an operating system and pay. If you need the server by a set date, ask us by live chat or ticket what is in stock in Italy first.
